I’m not going to lie to you, I am disappointed that “my” chef Nick Hodge of Kitchenette and Icehouse didn’t win tonight’s burger challenge during the Dans la rue From the street to the stars event. However, it was such a fun event that I really can’t stay mad for long (I do hope you know I’m joking). All 10 chefs present worked so hard at feeding over 600 people for such a worthy cause. I went around the room tasting all the burgers diligently so I can report to all of you of course! I will not name names but to be perfectly honest, I did not enjoy all of them. Some of my favourites – besides the Kitchenette one of course! – included the St-Urbain, the Café Ferreira and the Barroco burgers.

Kitchenette & Icehouse: Fried chicken chili cheeseburger
Barroco: Pork and truffle burger: braised pork served on a homemade bun, topped with peppercorn pecorino cheese and truffle cauliflower remoulade
Chez l'Épicier: Double burger of seasoned duck and foie gras with figs
Le Boucan: Jalapeño smoked burger: stuffed smoked jalapeño wrapped in bacon and served in a bun with homemade condiments
Pintxo: Foie gras burger
Le grain de sel: The Boudham: Boudin mini-hamburger complimented by banana chutney, aioli, chocolate and ancho chiles
Le Jolifou: Fresh smoked apple wood salmon with sweet cherry bomb pepper cristals and aioli chipotle sauce
Café Ferreira: Spicy trio meat burger with Serra cheese served in a Portuguese bun
Le St-Urbain: Osso bucco burger: 36-hour braised veal shank burger served in a smoked duck fat and pecorino bun
And now for the winners!
The judges choice for best burger went to Café Ferreira.
The people’s choice was as follows:
- 1st place: Le St-Urbain
- 2nd place: Bice
- 3rd place: A tie between Kitchenette/Icehouse and Barroco
Congratulations to all those who won and to all those who participated, it was such a fun evening! Although the biggest winners tonight are the kids who are being helped day in, day out by Dans la rue. If you couldn’t make it to tonight’s event, please consider donating to this great organization.
