The Sparrow, Montreal

I was just flipping through some of my photos and I remembered that I haven’t posted about my brunch at The Sparrow yet so here goes…

The Sparrow first appeared on the Montreal brunch scene a couple of years ago. It was then considered a very delicious and unique brunch experience, one like none other in Montreal at the time. The kitchen staff then packed up and left to open their own restaurant and The Sparrow stopped serving brunch for a while. But I am happy to report that brunch at The Sparrow has been back for a while now and is as good as ever!

The Sparrow, Montreal

I was glad to see that the space is still as hipster-friendly as ever when I visited a few weeks ago. People were lounging on a couch by the entrance and little hip kids were running around that day. The brunch concept is simple: it is a set, all-you-can-eat, 3-course meal that will cost you about $18, taxes in. The only choice you have to make is whether you want a vegetarian main or a carnivore one. Once you’ve gone through all 3 of your courses, you can order some more! Although I don’t see how you could possibly be hungry after polishing off the generous portions!

Pulled pork with coleslaw, hush puppies and a fried egg

On the day I was there, the first course consisted of some delicious Johnny cakes (a cornmeal flatbread) with crème fraîche and peach jam. I opted for the carnivore main, which was a generous amount of pulled pork served with coleslaw, hush puppies and topped with a fried egg. Dessert, a square of red velvet cake, was my least favourite part of the meal, perhaps because I was already full…

If you’re looking for a great brunch that serves affordable comfort food in a hipster ambiance on beautiful and dainty vintage china, then this is it! You – like I – may not realize you’ve been looking for such a brunch but believe me when I say, you’ll be glad you found it! I hear rave reviews about their other meals as well as about their creative drinks so I will surely have to pay them a nocturnal visit soon.
